Introduction of the Panel
As a key learning area, English Language at Kiangsu-Chekiang College (Kwai Chung) seeks to develop our students’ appreciation for the language and to equip them with the necessary skills to meet the needs and demands of our developing society.
To create a meaningful and effective language learning experience, our school-based curriculum has placed a considerable emphasis on building a solid foundation on the students’ understanding and mastery of the language forms – vocabulary, text types, grammar items and sentence patterns. We actively provide opportunities for practice of these elements in a meaningful manner through various English activities, such as the English Campus TV and participating in different English competitions. At the same time, KCCKC also utilizes the Language-Across-Curriculum Approach (LAC) to effectively engage students’ learning and appreciation of related English terms in other subjects.
Our panel includes a team of three Native English Teachers (NETs) to meet the needs of a more authentic English experience in the classroom, especially for Elite English learners. These lessons are designed in such a way for students to explore and be exposed to the 21st Century Learning Skills that aim to also elevate their language experience holistically through various in-class activities that focus on social and emotional competencies.
Objective of the Panel (Goals)
Our approach has two fundamental objectives:
1) to help students develop a strong understanding of the mechanics and conventions that are necessary for effective and purposeful communication in English
2) to cultivate a strong appreciation and develop a confident use of the language in order to use English for both academic purposes and authentic situations through fostering an English-rich environment.
These two goals form the main principles of our learning approach in the students’ six years of Secondary English at KCCKC.
Activities
Our students embarked on a 6-day tour to Singapore and Malaysia. This was a joint partnership between the English and History Departments.
Our students formed close bonds with their Singaporean buddies from Yio Chu Kang Secondary School during their visit to Singapore.
Our Native English Teachers come from various backgrounds to provide fun English learning to our students.
The Annual English Week provides our students with an opportunity to get to know various fun activities from different parts of the world.
Every Wednesday is English Day. Our students flex their speaking and presentation skills as they host the Morning Campus TV and Lunchtime Presentations.
KCCKC partners with Intercultural Education (ICE) in conducting the week-long English Camp, World Adventure Week. Our students meet people from around the world and experience a glimpse into their culture. In the most recent camp, our students were able to make their own Mexican Pinata and dance to the Bollywood beat.
